OpenAI announces five new Stargate sites, aims for adding 1 GW per week

OpenAI announces five new Stargate data centers, but Altman says this is only the beginning.

The Stargate program is on track to reach its full 10-gigawatt capacity by the end of 2025, the company says.

The five new data centers are all located in the USA; in Texas, New Mexico, Ohio and at an undisclosed site in the Midwest.

— We are particularly excited to build a lot of this in the US; right now, other countries are building things like chips fabs and new energy production much faster than we are, and we want to help turn that tide Sam Altman writes on his blog.

Some with Oracle, some with SoftBank
Three new data centers will be built in collaboration with Oracle, and bring Stargate up to 7 gigawatts of planned capacity «over the next three years.»

They will create some 25,000 onsite jobs and thousands of additional ones across the US.

They are also announcing an additional two data centers built with SoftBank in Ohio and Texas, which will add an extra 1.5 gigawatts.

OpenAI also notes that the flagship 4.5 GW Oracle facility in Abilene, Texas is already up and running both on regular OpenAI tasks as well as training, and they are building out a 600 MW extension to it.

Target is 1 GW per week
Going forward, Sam Altman writes that «we want to create a factory that can produce a gigawatt of new AI infrastructure every week,» but notes that this will extremely difficult and that it will take years to reach that target.

The current trajectory is for 10 GW, though, and that is plenty for now for the OpenAI boss;

— Maybe with 10 gigawatts of compute, AI can figure out how to cure cancer. Or with 10 gigawatts of compute, AI can figure out how to provide customized tutoring to every student on earth, he writes in his blog post, and adds:

— If we are limited by compute, we’ll have to choose which one to prioritize; no one wants to make that choice, so let’s go build.

Just yesterday, Nvidia made a deal with OpenAI to invest $100 billion and make them their «preferred» chip supplier.
